India's government is implementing four consolidated labor codes, effective November 21, 2026, aiming to enhance wages, safety, social security, and welfare for its workforce. These codes extend minimum wage rights and social security to more workers, including those in the unorganized sector. However, trade unions are protesting, arguing the laws favor employers by allowing easier hiring and firing, with companies of up to 299 employees now able to lay off staff without government approval. Concerns also exist regarding the practical implementation for informal workers.
