The Maharashtra cabinet has approved a draft Anti-Conversion Bill aimed at preventing forced or fraudulent religious conversions, including those through coercion, inducement, or deception. The bill requires individuals to give a 60-day notice and seek permission from designated authorities before converting, with mandatory registration within 25 days. Violations, including conversions by force or allurement, will be treated as non-bailable offenses. The legislation, supported by Hindutva groups and government leaders, is described as stricter than similar laws in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat and is expected to be introduced in the state assembly soon.
