A Chinese law enforcement official inadvertently exposed a covert campaign targeting Chinese dissidents abroad by using ChatGPT as a personal diary, according to an OpenAI report. The operation involved hundreds of participants and thousands of fake social media accounts across multiple platforms, including impersonations of US immigration officials and forged documents to pressure dissidents. OpenAI stated ChatGPT was mainly used for planning and record-keeping, not content creation, and the account was subsequently banned. Experts described the campaign as a broad, industrialized effort to suppress critics of the Chinese government.
