Rahul Gandhi and other members of the Standing Committee on Defence questioned the low absorption rate of ex-servicemen (ESM) into government jobs, citing a provision for 10-25% hiring against the current 1.9%. Concerns were also raised about inadequate healthcare access, with many ESM facing difficulties getting treatment at military hospitals and private facilities refusing care due to unpaid dues. The inadequacy of the ₹75,000 limit for cancer and kidney treatment was highlighted, with suggestions to increase it. Members also emphasized the need for PSUs to recruit retired soldiers.
