The Highways Department has commenced a ₹48 crore project to widen a 2.5-km stretch of Sardar Patel Road in Chennai, from IIT Madras to Chellammal College. This will convert the existing four-lane road into a six-lane facility with service lanes and footpaths to alleviate traffic congestion. Compound walls of adjacent government institutions will be relocated, while the Raj Bhavan area will remain unaffected. The project, sanctioned in September 2025, aims to improve traffic flow, with residents suggesting further widening of connecting roads.
