The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) informed the Central Information Commission that it has no records indicating whether the Jama Masjid in Sambhal was built over an earlier structure or on vacant land, nor does it have documents identifying the landowner at the time of construction. The mosque, constructed in 1526 according to ASI records, has been protected under the same name since 1920 and currently functions as a mosque. The ASI also noted a 2018 incident involving unauthorized construction at the site, which was halted.
