Union Minister S.P. Singh Baghel stated the Indian government cannot pay penalties imposed by Sri Lanka on fishermen for regulatory violations, as it would encourage repeated offenses. He assured affected families that the Union Government would engage in bilateral talks with Sri Lanka, involving the Indian Coast Guard and relevant state governments, to find a resolution to the issue of fishermen arrests.
