The Calcutta High Court ruled that caste-based abuses hurled over a phone call do not fall under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, as the abuse was not in "public view." Justice Jay Sengupta granted anticipatory bail to an accused, stating the Act's provisions are not prima facie attracted in such cases. The court noted that other charges in the FIR were bailable, deeming it a peculiar situation.
