AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has blamed the Congress for activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam being denied bail under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Owaisi stated that amendments to UAPA, introduced during a Congress-led UPA government when P. Chidambaram was Home Minister, created provisions now used for prolonged incarceration. He recalled his solitary objection in Parliament to the law's broad definition of terrorism, which he argued is now being misused against minorities and intellectuals. The Supreme Court recently denied bail to Khalid and Imam in the Delhi riots case.
