The Supreme Court has stayed the Calcutta High Court's November 13, 2025 verdict disqualifying Mukul Roy as a Member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly under the anti-defection law. Roy, elected in May 2021 from Krishnanagar Uttar on a BJP ticket, defected to the ruling Trinamool Congress in June 2021, retaining his MLA status. The Calcutta High Court's ruling was the first to exercise its constitutional authority to disqualify a legislator under this law, now paused by the Supreme Court.
