The Mizoram government plans to intensify efforts against the smuggling of areca nuts from Myanmar, which has caused economic losses to local farmers and increased illegal money circulation. From 2019 to 2025, authorities registered 468 smuggling cases, arresting 292 individuals under the Indian Penal Code, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Customs Act. The government maintains a zero-tolerance policy, aiming to strengthen border surveillance and prosecute offenders, including any involved officials.
