Maharashtra is set to elect mayors for 29 municipal corporations on January 15, 2026, with elections for many delayed by years due to legal disputes. The last elections, held between 2015 and 2018, were largely dominated by the BJP and its then-ally Shiv Sena, who formed governments in 15 corporations. The BJP individually secured a majority in 13 corporations, including Pune and Nagpur. Shiv Sena held its stronghold in Thane, and partnered with BJP in Mumbai until 2022. Congress and NCP won fewer corporations individually.
