During her first term as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu (1991-96), J. Jayalalithaa experienced strained relations with some Christian communities on two occasions. The first instance involved her visit to the San Thome Basilica on Christmas Day 1994. The second occurred in February 1995 when party functionaries displayed posters depicting her as the Virgin Mary, an act attributed to a desire to show loyalty.
