Mizoram Assembly Passes Amendment Banning Polygamy and Enhancing Women's Rights

The Mizoram Assembly unanimously passed an amendment to the 2014 Mizo Marriage, Divorce and Inheritance of Property Act, banning polygamy and bigamy and enhancing women's rights to matrimonial property after divorce. Introduced by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, the law now requires a divorce certificate for remarriage and excludes Mizo women marrying non-Mizos from the Act, affecting their and their children's tribal status. The amendment aligns state law with the 2023 Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and aims to protect women's financial security.
