Chandigarh Administrator Kataria suggested extending the mayor's term from the current one year to two-and-a-half years, citing the need for more time to plan and execute projects. He noted that a five-year term could lead to mayors not working effectively, while direct mayoral elections might weaken councillors' roles. Kataria also announced that the next mayor would be chosen by a show of hands for transparency. Separately, MP Manish Tewari proposed a private member's bill in the Lok Sabha to extend the tenure of the mayor and other municipal posts to five years.
