Algerian lawmakers have voted to classify France's colonial rule as a crime, demanding the return of seized property, archives, and maps of nuclear tests. The legislation, approved by a significant majority, also stipulates prison sentences for celebrating colonialism. France reacted strongly, calling the move a "hostile act" that could hinder reconciliation efforts, despite acknowledging ongoing dialogue to address historical grievances. The law covers the period from 1830 to Algeria's independence in 1962.
