Chandigarh Administration Proposes Amendments to Strengthen Property Violation Penalties

The Chandigarh Administration has proposed amendments to the Capital of Punjab (Development Regulation) Act, 1952, aiming to strengthen enforcement against property misuse and building violations in the Union Territory. The amendment introduces a structured penalty system under Section 13, with fines ranging from Rs 3 to Rs 10 per sq ft per day based on property type and violation severity, capped at 20% of the property's assessed value. It also mandates penalty payment within 30 days, with interest and recovery as land revenue arrears for defaults. Specific provisions address tree-related and advertisement violations, with penalties up to Rs 1 lakh for tree offenses. The proposal has been approved by the Punjab Governor and forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs for further processing.
