Geetha Hemachandran, the new chairperson of Varkala municipality, has prioritized continuing ongoing welfare measures and projects initiated by the previous council. She highlighted the need to address remaining works, such as the She Lodge and crematorium, and tackle staff shortages to ensure smooth functioning. Hemachandran, a CPI(M) councillor, also noted Varkala's unique challenges as a tourism hotspot, including protecting its cliff formations and enhancing waste management through public participation. The LDF coalition retained control of the municipality in the recent elections.
