Following a devastating plastic waste fire at Kochi's Brahmapuram yard in 2023, a 10-acre area has been transformed into a Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in February 2026. The plant processes 150 tonnes of biodegradable municipal solid waste daily, producing compressed biogas and organic manure. Funded by BPCL-Kochi Refinery and supported by government initiatives, this facility marks Kerala's first CBG plant, with plans for similar plants in other districts to advance sustainable waste management and clean energy goals.
