A head of introducing a regulatory framework and guidelines to safeguard the interests of over six lakh migrating students, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood on Monday held a meeting with the paying guest oweners, operators and managers along with stakeholder. The meeting was part of the efforts to formulate a comprehensive PG regulatory policy in the national capital to ensure safety, welfare, and security of the students. The meeting focused on understanding operational perspectives and addressing key challenges while prioritizing student security and basic living standards. Stressing the core ethos of the government's policy making, Sood said, "Following the recent unfortunate incident in Delhi, the process of regulating PGs and formulating new laws for them is ongoing. Under this initiative, a few days ago, I had engaged to understand the concerns of the students and residents living in PGs," he added. He informed that before drafting any new law, the Rekha Gupta government is engaging with everyone through stakeholder consultations, which is true participatory governance, and the very model of participatory governance the regime is working on. "Our concern is to ensure that people have access to safe, secure, reliable, and reasonably priced PG accommodations in Delhi," Sood said. He said that more than 600000 students come to the national capital every year from various places, and providing safe housing to the majority of them who reside in PGs is government's responsibility. Earlier, the minister had directly interacted with students residing in PG accommodations across university hubs, where they had voiced major concerns regarding arbitrary electricity charges, high rent rates, lack of security, and unverified landlords. After that on September 15, a high-powered committee meeting was held following feedback, chaired by Sood where critical measures had been discussed, to the likes of standard rental contracts, mandatory municipal registration, structural and fire safety audits, and fair pricing mechanisms.
