Latin America established republican orders respecting freedom and democracy 200 years ago, inspired by the United States. Early constitutions enshrined separation of powers, rule of law, civil liberties, free press, and regular elections. While a fully realized republican order across the continent may seem utopian today, the foundational principles were set by the region's founding fathers.
