The European Union is considering whether to expand its naval mission, Operation Aspides, from the Red Sea to the Strait of Hormuz amid disruptions caused by Iran's actions following U.S. and Israeli strikes. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas highlighted discussions on changing the mission's mandate or forming a coalition to secure the vital waterway, which carries a fifth of global oil supplies. However, some member states, including Germany, express skepticism about the mission's effectiveness and expansion. Talks also include exploring a Black Sea-style initiative with the UN to ensure safe passage, while no immediate decision to extend the mission has been made.
