Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin laid the foundation stone for the Mamallan reservoir, a Rs 342.60 crore project in the Kovalam basin near Mamallapuram, aimed at addressing Chennai's drinking water shortfall. The reservoir, spanning over 5,161 acres, will store surplus floodwater and supply around 170 million litres daily. It also aims to prevent seawater intrusion and recharge groundwater in nearby areas. The project honors Pallava ruler Narasimhavarman I and complements existing water sources like Veeranam lake and desalination plants.
