Mexico's Congress has approved a labour reform to gradually reduce the legal workweek from 48 to 40 hours by 2030, starting in 2027 with a two-hour annual reduction. The bill, championed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, also mandates one fully paid day off per week and introduces overtime limits and compensation rules. While the reform received broad legislative support, business groups warned of increased labour costs and reduced productivity, and some opposition members advocated for two days off weekly. The law aligns Mexico with other Latin American countries reducing work hours.
