Gujarat's Surat is reportedly on track to become India's first slum-free city with a population of 70-80 lakh, according to state minister Jitu Vaghani. He stated that slum settlements, which housed 36% of Surat's population in 2006, now represent only 5%. The state government aims to achieve this milestone through phased efforts, ensuring proper accommodation for residents. Chandigarh is currently recognized as the first slum-free city with a smaller population.
