Meghalaya Tribal Group Seeks PM's Intervention on Illegal Immigration and Limits Non-Tribal Rights

The Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) in Meghalaya has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address illegal immigration in the Garo Hills, citing the recent killing of tribal youth Dilseng M. Sangma as a critical concern. GSMC alleges unchecked illegal settlements, land encroachments, and falsification of identity documents by migrants from Bangladesh and Assam, threatening indigenous rights and constitutional protections under the Sixth Schedule. The group also passed resolutions restricting non-tribals' business, employment, and electoral participation in the region, criticizing local authorities for inadequate action.
