Karnataka Cabinet Approves Amendment to Use Ballot Papers in Local Elections

The Karnataka cabinet approved the Karnataka Gram Swaraj and Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2026, to reintroduce ballot papers and ballot boxes for upcoming local body elections, replacing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). This change aims to enhance transparency and voter confidence amid public concerns about EVM credibility. The amendment will apply to both rural and urban local elections, including Bengaluru's civic polls. Additionally, the cabinet approved amendments allowing transfer of suspended police officials and a one-time loan settlement scheme for Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation beneficiaries.
