Rajya Sabha MP Calls for End-of-Life Care Legislation Amid Supreme Court Directives

Rajya Sabha MP Haris Beeran urged the Central government to enact legislation on end-of-life care for terminally ill patients, highlighting Parliament's inaction despite multiple Law Commission reports since 2006 and Supreme Court directives over two decades. His appeal followed a recent Supreme Court order permitting withdrawal of life support for Harish Rana, in a vegetative state for 13 years. Beeran also emphasized the need for mandated palliative care infrastructure and noted the financial burden on families, with over 65% of healthcare costs paid out of pocket.
