Puducherry Plans Rs 500 Crore Scheme to Strengthen Karaikal Irrigation Canals

Puducherry Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan announced a Rs 500 crore scheme to strengthen and rejuvenate the irrigation canals in Karaikal, part of the Cauvery river basin. The canals, laid decades ago, are in poor condition, limiting effective use of the seven tmc of Cauvery water allocated to the region. The government aims to improve water use for farming and recharge subsoil water, with additional support sought from the National Institute of Technology under CSR initiatives. Benefits of agricultural schemes were also distributed to local farmers and laborers.
