India's Navy has acquired 48 advanced Black Shark heavyweight torpedoes from Italy's WASS for Rs 1,896 crore, ending a decade-long capability gap for its Kalvari-class submarines. These submarines, built with French collaboration, were designed to carry modern torpedoes but have operated with upgraded legacy systems since their commissioning. The new torpedoes will enhance the submarines' ability to engage surface warships and enemy submarines at long range.
