The Maharashtra government has formed a high-level committee, chaired by former chief secretary Jayant Kumar Banthia, to draft a policy framework for granting autonomy to Grant Government Medical College, Sir J J Group of Hospitals in Mumbai, and Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur. The committee will assess current administrative and academic structures, study successful models like AIIMS and Tata Memorial Hospital, and recommend governance, financial, and administrative mechanisms to enhance academic quality, research, and healthcare delivery. The move follows directives from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and addresses concerns raised by resident doctors and students.
