
The Union Home Ministry has established two additional empowered committees in West Bengal to expedite processing of citizenship applications under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), bringing the total to four. These committees, headed by senior central government officers, include members from intelligence, postal, and state government departments. The move follows the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and comes ahead of West Bengal's upcoming Assembly elections amid political tensions over the CAA's implementation in the state.
