President Droupadi Murmu has returned the Tamil Nadu University of Madras Amendment Bill to the state assembly for reconsideration. The bill, passed in 2022, sought to transfer the power to appoint and remove vice-chancellors from the Governor to the State government. Governor R.N. Ravi had reserved the bill, citing concerns it conflicted with University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations. The Tamil Nadu government has called the decision "unfortunate" and is exploring options, with the Higher Education Minister condemning the Governor's "partisan behaviour".
