Union Secretaries and Law Officers Recommend Measures to Reduce Government Litigation

At a recent conference on managing government litigation, over two dozen Union secretaries and top law officers identified key challenges including repetitive service litigation, divergent departmental positions, and a tendency to file appeals against court orders as a default reaction. They recommended establishing clear appeal-filtering criteria, appointing designated officers in each department for coordinated litigation handling, and implementing time-bound mechanisms for court judgments to reduce avoidable and repetitive litigation. Concerns were also raised about escalating land compensation cases, interest liabilities, and underutilisation of alternate dispute resolution.
