Odisha's estuarine saltwater crocodile population has risen marginally by 32, reaching 1,858 in the 2026 census conducted from January 8 to 10. The survey covered river systems around Bhitarkanika National Park, Gahirmatha Wildlife Sanctuary, the Mahanadi delta, and Devi river mouth, using boat-based day and night counts. Most crocodiles were found in Kanika Wildlife Range, with smaller numbers in Rajnagar, Mahakalpada, and Gahirmatha ranges. The increase reflects the national park's role as a safe habitat for these reptiles.
