Shimla's acute water shortage may ease with a new bulk supply project from the Sutlej River, increasing capacity from the current 40 MLD to an initial 42 MLD, eventually reaching 67 MLD over 15 years. The Rs 500 crore project, funded by the World Bank and launched in October 2020, uses ozone technology for water treatment and features a 27.3-km pipeline designed to minimize environmental impact by saving around 700 trees. Final testing is complete, with formal inauguration pending.
