JAMA Study Highlights Rising Global and Indian Prevalence of Metabolic Liver Disease

A recent JAMA study highlights metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), affecting 30-40% of adults globally and linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic disorders. India ranks among the top three countries with a sharp rise in cases, driven by abdominal obesity and related conditions. Experts, including hepatologist Dr Cyriac Abby Philips, emphasize that early detection can lead to reversal of the disease, which is associated with increased liver-related morbidity and mortality.
