Southern Railway has reduced over 80 suburban train services on the Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu and Beach-Tambaram routes due to redevelopment work at Egmore station, causing heavy crowds and commuter difficulties. The reductions began on February 20 and increased from February 24, affecting thousands of daily passengers. The ruling DMK and Congress have criticized the cancellations for lack of prior notice and called for restoration of services and alternative transport, especially with upcoming public exams.
