Two tourists from Kerala drowned after the frozen surface of Sela Lake in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang district gave way on January 16, 2026. The group of seven had stopped at the lake, located at about 13,700 feet altitude, when one member slipped into the icy water. Dinu (26) and Mahadev (24) entered the lake attempting a rescue but were swept under. One tourist survived. Rescue teams recovered both bodies after suspending operations overnight due to harsh weather. Authorities have issued advisories and installed warning signs cautioning visitors against walking on the unstable ice.
