The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of reports about an alleged illegal egg extraction racket in Maharashtra's Badlapur area. The racket reportedly exploited financially vulnerable women for repeated commercial egg donations, violating the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021, which permits only one unpaid donation per woman. Preliminary police investigations suggest around 40 women were affected, with some subjected to multiple procedures. NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma has directed Maharashtra police to conduct a thorough, impartial investigation to identify all involved parties.
