An environmentalist has raised concerns about the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, misnaming Manipur's state animal, the Sangai (brow-antlered deer), as "Thamin." Dr. Khangembam Shamungou Singh highlighted that the Sangai, scientifically Rucervus eldii eldii, is critically endangered and protected under Schedule I, but the Act uses the name "Thamin," which refers to a related deer species found more broadly in Asia. He questioned the legislative intent and hoped the Manipur Science Congress would address this nomenclature issue.
