Phase III of the All India Tiger Estimation 2025-26 began at Periyar Tiger Reserve on February 25, involving 470 grids divided into two-square-kilometre sections across the reserve. A total of 940 camera traps, two per grid, have been deployed to capture images of tigers' unique stripe patterns for individual identification. The 30-day monitoring follows national protocols, with regular inspections of equipment to ensure data quality. This phase builds on earlier assessments and focuses on key tiger habitats within the reserve.
