The National Zoological Park in Delhi welcomed the birth of a smooth-coated otter pup in January, marking the first such birth since 2004. The adult otters, aged three to four years, were brought from Kamla Nehru Zoological Park in Surat last year under an animal exchange programme and kept under quarantine before public display. The female was pregnant upon arrival and has been closely monitored. The male otter was hospitalized due to a health condition, possibly linked to limited feeding during the female's protective nursing phase. The male is expected to be displayed publicly first, with the female and pup introduced later when weather conditions improve.
