In 1905, Kuriyedathu Thatri, a Namboodiri woman from Kerala, stood trial in a landmark Smarthavicharam case, naming 64 men from various communities as her lovers. The trial, ordered by the King of Cochin after her husband's complaint, lasted seven months and involved detailed evidence from Thatri, who challenged caste and gender norms. She was convicted of adultery and excommunicated alongside the accused men. Her story continues to resonate in contemporary discussions on gender justice, caste dynamics, and women's agency in India.
