A gas leak caused a blast at the Sayanam old-age home in Attukal on Friday, injuring two staff members, Maya and Rajeev, who were working on a cylinder. Maya sustained 18 burns below the waist, while Rajeev suffered 10 burns on his hands and legs. Both were admitted to a private hospital. All 41 residents, aged over 70, were safely evacuated by Fire and Rescue Services personnel. The incident caused damage to the gas regulator, exhaust fans, and electrical wiring.
