A venue at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale was temporarily closed after protests by Christian groups over an artwork depicting a version of Jesus Christ's 'Last Supper'. Organizers stated the closure was a precautionary measure due to New Year restrictions and to prevent law-and-order issues. Christian organizations claimed the painting by artist Tom Vattakuzhy hurt religious sentiments and disrespected traditional depictions. The artist denied any intention to defame the Last Supper, stating his work is influenced by his upbringing and empathy. The Syro-Malabar Church emphasized that freedom of expression should not offend religious beliefs.
