Vulture Conservation Efforts Lead to Griffon Vulture Sightings in Maharashtra Reserves

The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and Maharashtra Forest Department have made progress in reviving vultures in Melghat and Tadoba Tiger Reserves, where they had become locally extinct due to toxic veterinary drugs. In 2023, 15 critically endangered long-billed vultures were relocated from a breeding center to Melghat for acclimatization and release. Following this, sightings of migratory Himalayan and Eurasian griffon vultures indicate improving ecological conditions and potential species recovery in these areas.
