Assam has experienced a significant rainfall deficit of over 70% since November and 99% since January 1, with 25 districts receiving no rain, according to India Meteorological Department data. This prolonged dry spell, continuing since early November, has caused moisture stress in rabi crops like rapeseed, potato, and maize, reducing yields and shortening growth periods. Experts note that February rainfall is vital for tea crops, and current dryness may delay new flushes. Unusually warm temperatures, especially in upper Assam, have also led to early flowering in fruit crops such as mango and litchi.
