Archaeologists have discovered the earliest evidence of adult cremation in Africa, dating back 9,500 years in Malawi. The ritual involved a large, maintained pyre used to cremate a small adult woman, suggesting complex social roles and mortuary practices among Stone Age hunter-gatherers. This finding represents the earliest known example of an adult pyre cremation globally, though earlier, less complete cremations have been found elsewhere.
