Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a nearly blind Rohingya refugee from Myanmar, was found dead in Buffalo after being released by U.S. Border Patrol agents who dropped him at a coffee shop miles from his home. Shah Alam had spent nearly a year in jail awaiting trial on misdemeanor charges and was released following a plea deal. Buffalo officials, including Mayor Sean Ryan, criticized the Border Patrol's decision as unsafe and inhumane, while the agency stated he showed no signs of distress and was dropped at a warm location. Homicide detectives are investigating his death.
